Finding an egg donor

Written by: Brian Lieberman on Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

In the UK there’s a huge shortage of egg donors, and current regulations mean it’s illegal to advertise for one. So if you need a donor egg, how do you find a donor?

Many people find donors through licensed, registered clinics like Manchester Fertility Services. Our egg donors donate their eggs under current HFEA guidelines and rules.

Treatment carried out this way means it is completely anonymous – you won’t ever meet your donor, and they won’t ever meet you, but any resulting child you have can apply for information to trace the donor when they reach 18, if they wish. All our egg donors know fully the implications of their donation and what it legally means.

However, there is nothing to stop you finding a donor yourself. Although you cannot advertise for one, many women ask family or close friends to be their egg donor.

But it’s not as simple as finding someone who will agree. In order for someone to donate their eggs, a suitable egg donor must fulfil certain criteria. These include:

  • Age: Egg donors must be between the ages of 23 and 35
  • Medical history: Egg donors must be willing to undergo screening tests for medical conditions and have no known serious medical disability or family history of hereditary disorders. They must also know (or be able to find out) their own medical history and that of their immediate family – children, siblings, parents and grandparents – and not put themselves at risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Availability: Egg donors must be able to commit their time to attend regular clinic appointments and the egg retrieval procedure
  • Registration: Egg donors must agree to be registered with the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) as a donor
  • Identification: Egg donors must be willing to be identified to any resulting children in the future
  • Disclosure: Egg donors cannot knowingly omit any relevant information which could affect the health of any children born as a result of their donation
  • Potential egg donors must also undergo counselling to make sure they fully understand the implications of their donation, even if they know you well.

If you think you’ve found someone who can be your egg donor, call us for a chat today on 0161 227 0010 or email info@manchesterfertility.com. We’d be happy to discuss any questions you, or your potential donor, has.
